Biography
Toralf Kirsten, Ph.D., is Professor of Medical Data Science and Head of Medical Informatics at the Faculty of Medicine, Leipzig University. Prior to his current role, he held senior research positions across Leipzig University's Interdisciplinary Center for Bioinformatics, LIFE Research Center, and Institute for Computer Science. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Leipzig University in 2007 with a focus on life science data integration.
His research interests bridge the gap between core computer science and clinical data science, focusing on scalable data management, privacy-preserving analytics, and the translation of machine and deep learning techniques into routine patient care. A key pillar of his work is the development of distributed computing infrastructures (PADME, FLAME) that enable federated learning and privacy-compliant data processing across decentralized medical centers. In this domain, Prof. Kirsten and his team lead the development of the AMPEL system, an innovative Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS) designed to evaluate complex clinical data streams in real time. By integrating distributed analytics frameworks into live clinical workflows, his research ensures that advanced machine learning models directly support physicians in point-of-care decision-making, ultimately advancing patient safety while preserving strict data privacy standards.
