Cardiac surgeon turned digital transformation lead at Klinikum Nürnberg, one of Germany's largest municipal hospitals. He shares what it took to digitise a whole hospital city.
Biography
Herbert Quinz is a physician and board-certified cardiac surgeon with more than ten years of experience in strategic management at university hospitals and tertiary care centres. Since 2023 he has headed Digital Process and Technology Management and Medical Management at Klinikum Nürnberg, where he is responsible for digitalising clinical and administrative processes — hospital information system, patient data management system, patient portal — modernising the infrastructure and steering complex interdisciplinary change projects. From 2015 to 2023 he was Head of Medical Strategy, Medical Organisation and PMO at University Hospital Augsburg.
He studied medicine at the University of Padua, trained as a cardiac surgeon at University Hospital Augsburg with a focus on minimally invasive and transcatheter procedures, and holds a doctorate from the Medical Faculty Augsburg and a Master of Health Business Administration (MHBA) from FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg. He coordinates the general practice training network in Augsburg and lectures on healthcare management at FOM University of Applied Sciences and the University of Bolzano. His focus: practical digitalisation solutions and process optimisation that put the needs of patients and staff first, so that they are accepted and work in everyday clinical practice.
