Biography
Professor Evis Sala is a Professor of Radiology at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Rome, Italy.
She served as the Minister of Health and Social Welfare of Albania from September 2025 to September 2026. Until September 2025, she was Chair of the Department of Diagnostic Imaging and Radiotherapy at Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, Rome, and Director of the Radiology Residency Training Program at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore.
Previously, Professor Sala was Professor of Oncological Imaging at the University of Cambridge, where she co-led the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Centre Advanced Cancer Imaging Programme and the Integrated Cancer Medicine Programme. From 2012 to 2018, she served as Professor of Radiology at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of the Body Imaging Service at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York.
Professor Sala received her MD from the University of Tirana in 1991 before moving to the United Kingdom, where she earned an MPhil and a PhD in Epidemiology and Biostatistics from the University of Cambridge in 2000. She subsequently completed her specialist training in Radiology at Cambridge.
An internationally recognised leader in oncological imaging, her pioneering research in radiogenomics and artificial intelligence has advanced the development of quantitative imaging biomarkers for cancer detection, tumour characterisation, assessment of tumour heterogeneity, and prediction of treatment response and clinical outcomes. She has authored more than 340 peer-reviewed publications and is co-founder of Lucida Medical, a company developing AI-powered MRI software to improve early cancer detection.
In recognition of her scientific and clinical contributions, Professor Sala has been elected Fellow of the International Cancer Imaging Society (2013), the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (2015), and the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (2018). She was awarded Honorary Membership of the Radiological Society of North America (2022) and the Japan Radiological Society (2024). She is currently President-Elect of the European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR) and serves as an Appointed Expert for the European Union's Comprehensive Cancer Infrastructures initiative (CCI4EU).
