Abstract
Introduction: 25-Hydroxyvitamin D# [25(OH)D#] is essential for calcium–phosphorus metabolism, bone mineralization, and immune function. In Mongolia, limited sunlight exposure due to climatic and geographic conditions restricts endogenous vitamin D synthesis. Mining workers are particularly at risk due to occupational constraints on sun exposure.
Objective: To determine serum 25(OH)D# levels among mining workers.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 240 mining workers undergoing preventive health examinations in March 2026. Serum 25(OH)D# levels were measured and categorized as deficiency (<20 ng/mL), insufficiency (20–30 ng/mL), and sufficiency (>30 ng/mL). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Pearson’s chi-square test.
Results: The mean age was 39.38 years (21–60), with 72.5% males and 27.5% females. Overall, 65.83% were vitamin D deficient, 17.92% insufficient, and 16.25% sufficient. No significant association was found between age and vitamin D status (p=0.220). However, deficiency was significantly higher in males (82.28%) compared to females (17.72%), while sufficient levels were more evenly distributed (males 48.72%, females 51.28%). A significant association was observed between sex and vitamin D status (p<0.001).
Conclusion: Vitamin D deficiency is highly prevalent among mining workers, particularly in males. These findings highlight the need for targeted screening and preventive interventions, including vitamin D supplementation in this high-risk occupational group.
